Services Offered

Kier and Mitzi of Firstlight Photography are a husband-and-wife team that treats their couples like part of the family. They pride themselves on building great relationships, and love nothing more than being asked to shoot family portraits for their past wedding clients.

Their style is mostly candid and photojournalistic, and while they do capture some posed formal shots, they focus on documenting your day as it happens. They aim to capture "the details and smiles and quirks that make your wedding uniquely yours."

Prices and/or Package Info

Firstlight Photography offers a wide range of packages and works to tailor them to each couple. Need two photographers? Not a problem. Interested in having a photo booth at your wedding? They can do that, too.

They also offer a "Micro Wedding / Elopement" photography package for just $775.

Reviews

“Quality photography, great customer service, and a comfortable easygoing vibe—you can’t beat that!”

“The mix of traditional and non-traditional photos was perfect. Just enough traditional ones to keep relatives happy and then tons of the more creative, candid shots that I really wanted.”

“He was very good with us, never pushy, but guided us towards quality shots. He captures great candid shots, but also posed us in some spots that created awesome, modern photos.”

“Kier was great during the photos of me getting ready for my big day. I’m pretty ridiculous and so are my friends. Kier didn’t even bat an eye at our antics. It was like he was one of us.”

“His customer service is extremely professional.”

“During the ceremony and at the reception I hardly noticed he was there yet he managed to take amazing photos. I can’t believe how many photos Kier was able to take. He even managed to get great photos of people who normally wouldn’t get in front of a camera.”

“Kier is just a very genuinely nice guy who you can tell loves what he does.”

“I’m very happy with all of the photos. There are almost too many good ones!

Questions and Answers

Why should someone hire you?
We take our job very seriously, but still have a lot of fun doing it. This is our full-time profession. We recognize we have just one chance to capture your wedding and we never take that lightly. It is a great responsibility and we are up for the challenge.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
Monty Python & The Holy Grail led directly to a love of photography, but it's a long story. Feel free to ask. By high school the photography bug was in full swing and Kier traded in his bike for his first 35mm camera. Kier started out at a local newspaper doing sports photography, grew his portrait business and began photographing weddings. Mitzi started out as a page editor for her high school and college newspapers and has turned this into a love of blogging and social media updates for the business. As a kid she always had a camera in her pocket. Her first was a Kodak Disc (the horror!).
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Over the years interests change and influences come and go. In High School the U2 Joshua Tree cover and other photos from those sessions were a big influence, as were Guess Jean ads.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
What amazes us is that each wedding is as uniquely different as are our couples. What we love about weddings is that traditions are changing. Couples are creating their own and we are constantly surprised by fun and heartfelt new traditions. We've seen pinball tournaments, staged a "paparazzi chase" on pedi-cabs through Georgetown and photographed a wedding on a ferry, just to name a few.
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
The couple is key. We love to see how their story unfolds. Getting to meet family and friends and be such a part of the day is spectacular. The love the couple shares leaves a lasting impression.
What have weddings taught you?
No matter how much you prepare something will go off plan. The team you pick for your day is key to being able to roll with the punches. Pick wisely and those bumps in the road are handled by your adept team of vendors.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Pick a strong team that will help stay on schedule and cater to the couple. It is important to enjoy and be present at your own wedding. Check references and don't be afraid to ask other vendors, too.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
That is easy—all cell phones, tablets, selfie sticks and click-and-point cameras would be rendered invisible until the car ride home! We see a lot of people missing out on the actual moments that make a wedding so special. We will deliver the photos and guests can view them all online.
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Be your spouse's cheerleader and advocate. Be sure to pay compliments and point out a job well done. A considerate gesture goes a long way. A little appreciation will build you both up.
Extracurricular activities:
We both love movies and road trips, Mitzi loves the thrill of the hunt while thrift shopping and when things slow down, Kier likes to go camping with the kids and from time to time Mitzi will indulge him and go along.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
That is really hard. We can't imagine doing anything else. We have put our heart and souls into our career and business. If we had to answer, Kier would have his own brewery and Mitzi would be in the film industry. We'd still be taking photos though!
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
We love to go out on photo expeditions. If it involves a hike it is even better (yes, we go out and take photos when we're not out taking photos). We love family time and time with friends—Sunday brunch gatherings are the best.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any.
Our dogs are the perfect studio photo bombers. They love to be photographed and will get right in there with our clients if we leave the studio door open.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges?
We try to eat fairly clean since our work is physically demanding. We love to kick back at MOD Pizza and appreciate their business practices. We also have a favorite taco bus and a little sushi place. Our first date was at a Thai restaurant so that holds a sentimental value.
