Joey Kennedy describes his photographic style as Fine Art. His work is more cinematic than journalistic, and he shoots in both digital and film to create a timeless look. He lets moments unfold naturally, providing couples with just enough direction to help elicit the best photos without actually posing them. He works with natural light and zeroes in on intricate details.

But above all else, he focuses on the people. He says, "I want the pictures to become even more valued as the years go by because they show Family who may not be around in the future. As clients grow older, they'll want to look at those photos again and again. They'll remember what it was like to see their parents and grandparents on that day, photographed in beautiful light with authentic emotion. When you have great images, they will fill your heart!"

"Great guy, HUGE talent."

"He is calm, he is warm, he is sensitive and he is really good at making those uncomfortable in front of a camera feel less stressed and uptight. This, of course is critical for good photos."

Questions and Answers

How did you get into wedding photography?
I've always been an artist at heart. I started out as a painter, but I switched to photography as a way to express myself creatively. After teaching photography for seven years, I began shooting weddings full time in 2009 and I'm still passionate about it!
Why should someone hire you?
I enjoy making every wedding photographic art—just as I would want my own wedding photographed. Because your wedding day is so emotionally intense and special, it is an artistic joy to capture the happiness, the feelings, and the personalities of not only the bride and groom, but the dear families and friends as well. Every detail and every person is important.
Why do couples enjoy working with you so much?
I've been told that clients like my style of communication, and can see that I really care about them. I also have an intense work ethic; I put a lot of effort into getting every shot I possibly can. I really hustle, and no matter how hard a shot is to get I never stop trying. I always think about what I would want done, so I'm very invested. There's no autopilot for me! I'm going to work incredibly hard for you, and hopefully make great art, too!
Destination weddings are a big part of what you do, right?
Definitely! I shoot nationwide, especially in California where the light, atmosphere and people are really special. The landscape, the weather…it's all perfect! I think my style and sensibilities are a great fit for the West.
What have weddings taught you?
A wedding is one day out of a lifetime where family and friends gather together to celebrate such a joyous life happening, and it is of the utmost importance to capture the essence of this day through the eyes of the bride and groom and every attendee. Your wedding is an important documentary of a life decision that you will appreciate for a lifetime and for your children in generations to come.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
I love capturing authentic and touching emotions from the parents throughout the day—especially the "getting dressed" part. One instance that comes to mind was a "Father's First Look" that I did with one bride; the lifetime of love, protection and caring for his daughter on his face as he turned around and saw her dressed as a bride for the first time absolutely imprinted itself in my mind, and I know those pictures will be treasured all her life.
What 3 words best describe your work?
Hardworking, artistic, fun.
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Never stop dating each other!
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
From Painter – to Sculptor – to Photographer – to Photography Teacher – to Fine Art/Wedding Photographer. When I photograph and document a wedding day, I become a part of their life history and family, and I cherish this privilege as a friend. They know I care, and from their smiles, they know that I enjoyed their day, too!
